Vietnam's Ha Giang Loop is one of Southeast Asia's most spectacular motorcycle routes — 350km through limestone karst mountains at the Chinese border.

Vietnam Motorbike Adventure Guide 2026: Ha Giang Loop & Beyond

The Ha Giang Loop is Vietnam's most celebrated motorcycle route — a 350km circuit through Hà Giang province at Vietnam's northernmost tip, where limestone karst mountains meet the Chinese border and ethnic minority communities (Hmong, Dao, Tay, Lo Lo) have maintained traditional ways of life largely undisturbed by the lowland tourism economy.

The route has attracted a growing community of motorcycle travelers who have discovered that the Ha Giang landscape rivals anything in Southeast Asia — and is still, compared to the heavily touristed south and central Vietnam, genuinely wild.

The Route

Hà Giang City → Dong Van → Meo Vac → Du Gia → Hà Giang City

Day 1: Hà Giang City → Quan Ba (Heaven's Gate viewpoint, "fairy breast" twin mountains visible from the pass) → Yen Minh → Dong Van (150km)

Day 2: Dong Van → Lung Cu Flag Tower (Vietnam's northernmost point) → Ma Pi Leng Pass → Meo Vac (80km). The Ma Pi Leng Pass — a 20km mountain road cut into limestone cliffs 2,000m above the Nho Que River — is the route's most dramatic section.

Day 3: Meo Vac → Du Gia (via Mau Due, passing through Pu Lo Ngai valley) → overnight at Du Gia (120km)

Day 4: Du Gia → Hà Giang City (60km, easy riding, option to extend via Thon Tha or Vi Xuyen)

Practical Logistics

Getting to Hà Giang: 6-hour overnight bus from Hanoi (250,000 VND, book at My Dinh Bus Station). Or hire a private van.

Motorbike options:

  • Semi-automatic Honda Win: The traditional choice. Cheap (1–1.5 million VND/day). Requires basic mechanical competence and tolerance for reliability issues.
  • Automatic scooter (Honda Air Blade, Yamaha Exciter): More reliable, easier to ride. Recommended for inexperienced riders.
  • Guides (Easy Riders): Experienced local guides who drive you as a passenger or lead your convoy. Highly recommended for first-time visitors — they provide local knowledge, accommodation bookings, and emergency support.
  • Fuel: Petrol stations are less frequent in the mountains. Fill up completely at every opportunity.

Roads: Mix of good paved roads and rough construction zones. All passable on standard touring bikes. 4WD experience NOT required.

    Other Great Vietnam Motorcycle Routes

Hai Van Pass (Da Nang to Hue): 22km mountain pass between two cities. The most dramatic coastal mountain road in Vietnam. 2 hours by motorbike, 15 minutes by train through the mountain. Do it by motorbike.

Ho Chi Minh Road (Truong Son Road): The original supply route through the mountains along the Laos border. Several sections in the central highlands remain spectacular and under-traveled.

Cao Bang Circuit (Ban Gioc Waterfall): Northeastern Vietnam, 3–4 days from Hanoi, centered on Ban Gioc waterfall (the largest waterfall in Vietnam, on the Chinese border). Less visited than Ha Giang but equally spectacular.
