Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world — every extreme sport is available within 30 minutes. Here is the complete guide to what to do and what it costs.

Queenstown New Zealand Adventure Guide 2026: Bungee, Skydive & Ski

Queenstown earned its "adventure capital of the world" title by inventing commercial bungee jumping (A.J. Hackett, 1988) and then building an entire economy of extreme experiences around that original audacity. The geography helps — the Remarkables mountain range, Coronet Peak, the Shotover River gorge, and the 12km-long Lake Wakatipu all provide natural stages for activities that require dramatic settings.

The Essential Experiences

The Nevis Bungee (134m): The highest bungee jump in New Zealand. A gondola ride to a pod suspended above the Nevis River gorge. 8.5 seconds of free fall. The most significant bungee experience in the world after Macau Tower (233m). NZD 275.

The Nevis Swing: The world's biggest swing. A 300m arc through the Nevis gorge at 120km/h. NZD 215.

Shotover Jet: A flat-bottomed jet boat rocketing through the Shotover River canyon at 85km/h, within centimeters of the rock walls. The most established Queenstown activity (operating since 1965). NZD 169.

AJ Hackett Bungy Jumping (multiple locations): The Kawarau Bridge (original bungee site, 43m, NZD 205), the Ledge (47m, above Queenstown, night jumps available), and the Nevis (134m).

Queenstown Skydive: 45-second free fall from 15,000ft (4,572m) over Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables. The tandem skydive takes 1.5 hours total. NZD 399 (15,000ft).

Canyon Swing: Free fall with a pendulum swing at the end — technically different from bungee (not elastic cord). Shotover Canyon Swing is the best operator.

Skiing

Queenstown has two major ski areas: The Remarkables (2,340m peak, 17 lifts) and Coronet Peak (1,649m peak, 10 lifts). Both are 30–45 minutes from Queenstown and offer complementary conditions — Remarkables gets better snow early season, Coronet Peak has better afternoon sun and snow in late season.

Season: June–October. Best snow typically July–August.

Day lift pass: NZD 149–185. Multi-day discounts available.

Planning the Activities

The Queenstown activity operators have worked together to create packages. The most efficient approach for 3+ activities: book through the AJ Hackett multi-activity package or the Queenstown Activity Centre for bundled pricing (saves 10–20% vs individual booking).

Activity booking principle: Book bungee at least 24 hours ahead in summer peak season (December–March). Jet boat and swing can often be booked same-day.
