The Serengeti is the world's greatest wildlife destination. Here is the complete planning guide — where the animals are by month, which camps offer the best experience, and what it costs.

Tanzania Serengeti Safari Guide 2026: Best Camps, Seasons & Budget

The Serengeti National Park covers 14,763km² of East African savanna and is the scene of the Great Migration — 1.5 million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra, and 500,000 gazelle following the rain across the Tanzania-Kenya ecosystem in a circular pattern. The park also has the highest predator density in Africa, with the big cats present year-round.

Tanzania's safari circuit typically combines the Serengeti with Ngorongoro Crater (one of the world's largest intact calderas, with extraordinary wildlife density) and often Tarangire or Lake Manyara.

Seasonal Wildlife Guide

January–March (Calving Season, Southern Serengeti): 400,000 calves born in a 3-week window in the Ndutu and Ngorongoro area. Cheetah, lion, and leopard follow the vulnerable calves. The predator-prey interactions during calving season are the most intense in East Africa.

June–July (Mara River Crossings Begin): Wildebeest herds move into the Western Corridor and begin crossing the Mara River into Kenya. River crossings — dramatic, chaotic, and prey to crocodiles — begin in late June and continue through October.

August–October (Peak River Crossing Season): The herds in the northern Serengeti near the Kenya border. The Mara River crossings are at maximum frequency. Peak season pricing. Book camps 6–12 months ahead for August.

November–December (Short Rains, Southern Return): Herds begin moving south. Short rains green the Serengeti. Fewer tourists. The southern plains offer excellent game viewing as the herds return.

Camp Recommendations

The Serengeti has over 50 lodges and camps. The primary distinction is between permanent lodges (built structures, open year-round) and mobile camps (follow the migration, relocated seasonally).

Luxury Permanent Lodges

Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti: The most hotel-like experience in the Serengeti. Pool, spa, reliable Wi-Fi. The hippo pool view from the main lodge is extraordinary. $800–1,400/person/night all-inclusive.

Singita Grumeti (Reserves): The gold standard of Serengeti luxury. The Reserves area gives exclusive vehicle access to an enormous private concession. Rates are not publicly listed; expect $2,000+/person/night.

Migration Camps (Follow the Herds)

Asilia Africa's Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (when in Serengeti): Well-run mobile camp that repositions to follow the migration. $600–900/person/night.

Nomad Tanzania's Serengeti Pioneer Camp: Top-tier mobile camp. Excellent naturalist guides, excellent food. $700–1,000/person/night.

Budget

Private camping (TANAPA campsites): $30–50/night site fee. You provide equipment and meals. The actual wildlife access is identical to luxury camp guests.

Budget lodge options: $200–400/person/night all-inclusive at mid-range properties like Serengeti Sopa Lodge.

The Ngorongoro Crater

2.5 hours from Arusha, Ngorongoro is a caldera 19km in diameter and 600m deep. The enclosed ecosystem supports 25,000 animals — including the highest lion density in East Africa (approximately 62 lions in 300km²) and one of the last viable black rhino populations in Tanzania.

The floor descent (steep road, 4WD mandatory) reveals a landscape of lake, swamp, and grassland. Half-day game drives in the crater typically yield lion, elephant, black rhino, hippo, and most of the big cat species.

Getting There

International flights to Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA) near Arusha, or Julius Nyerere International in Dar es Salaam. Most Northern Circuit safaris operate from Arusha.

Charter flights from Arusha to Serengeti airstrips (multiple): 45 minutes–1 hour. Essential for accessing remote camps efficiently.
