Tallinn has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe — and a startup tech culture and design scene that feels entirely 21st century. Here is the full guide.

Tallinn Estonia Travel Guide 2026: Medieval Old Town & Modern City

Estonia may be the world's most digitally advanced nation. It was the birthplace of Skype, pioneered digital voting, and allows any citizen of the world to become an e-resident and run a European business online. Its capital, Tallinn, holds this paradox comfortably — a perfectly preserved medieval city with a startup scene that punches far above its size.

The Old Town

Tallinn's Old Town (Vanalinn) is the best-preserved medieval city center in Northern Europe. The limestone city walls, 46 towers, and 13th-century street plan all survive essentially intact.

Toompea Hill (Upper Town): The elevated fortified hill at the center of the old town houses the Estonian Parliament (Riigikogu) in a pink Baroque palace, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (Russian Orthodox, 1900, built deliberately to assert Russian imperial dominance), and Tall Hermann tower — where the Estonian flag flies.

Lower Town: The merchant quarter below Toompea. Town Hall Square (Raekoja plats) is the medieval market hub, still surrounded by 14th-century merchants' houses. The 15th-century Old Thomas weathervane on the Town Hall tower is Tallinn's unofficial mascot.

Viru Gate: The main medieval entrance to the old town — two towers, a cobblestone passage, and the best photo opportunity in the city.

Kadriorg Park: 15-minute tram ride from the old town. Built by Peter the Great for his wife Catherine, it now contains the Kadriorg Art Museum, the KUMU modern art museum (the best in the Baltics), and manicured gardens.

Food and Restaurants

Estonian cuisine has modernized dramatically in the past decade. Traditional elements — black bread, smoked fish, fermented vegetables, wild game — are now presented in contemporary forms.

Leib Resto ja Aed: Farm-to-table Estonian cuisine in a garden setting. One of Tallinn's best restaurants.

Olde Hansa: Medieval theme restaurant that actually delivers — actors in period costume, food served in wooden bowls, mead. Touristy by design but genuinely fun and historically interesting.

F-hoone (Telliskivi Creative City): The converted factory district northwest of the old town. The best neighborhood for cafes, independent restaurants, vintage shops, and street art.

Viru Turg (market): The covered market near Viru Gate. Pick up wild berries, pickled vegetables, smoked meats, and Estonian handicrafts at local prices.

Day Trips

Lahemaa National Park: 90 minutes east of Tallinn. The largest national park in Estonia — manor houses, bogs, forest, and coastline. Hire a guide for bog-walking in rubber boots (genuinely fun).

Tartu: Estonia's second city and university town, 2.5 hours south by bus. Has a more Estonian (less tourist) feel than Tallinn, excellent cafe culture, and the Estonian National Museum.

Helsinki: 2.5 hours by ferry from Tallinn's port. Eckerö Line offers affordable crossings. Many visitors do Tallinn–Helsinki or vice versa as part of a Baltic–Nordic combination trip.

Practical Notes

Best time to visit: May–September. Winter is cold and dark (average December temps -4°C) but Christmas market and festive atmosphere compensate. June brings White Nights — nearly 19 hours of daylight.

Currency: Euro. Tallinn is significantly cheaper than Helsinki and Stockholm but slightly pricier than Riga and Vilnius.

Language: Estonian (a Finno-Ugric language, unrelated to the surrounding Slavic and Baltic languages). English is universally spoken by anyone under 50 in the city.
