Cancún is fun. It's also expensive, crowded, and predictable. These 7 alternatives give you the beach, the vibe, and the stories — for less money.
The week before spring break, flights to Cancún jump by 60%. Hotels follow. The strip gets loud. And by the end of the week, you've spent $2,800 for something that looked basically like every other spring break trip you've seen on Instagram.
There's a better way to do this.
These seven destinations hit every note you want — warm water, good nightlife, affordable accommodation — without the premium you pay just for the name.
1. Cartagena, Colombia — The Party City Nobody Talks About
Cartagena has everything: colonial architecture, Caribbean beaches, rooftop bars, and a nightlife scene centered around Getsemaní that feels more alive than anything on the Cancún strip. Flights from Miami run about $280 roundtrip. A solid hostel in the walled city costs $25/night; a boutique hotel runs $80-120.
The beach situation: Playa Blanca is 45 minutes by boat. Bring snacks. It's worth it.

2. Tulum, Mexico — Cenotes, Not Clubs
Yes, technically Mexico. But Tulum is 3 hours south of Cancún and a completely different vibe. Instead of all-inclusives, you get eco-chic jungle hotels. Instead of clubs, you get cenote swims at sunrise and rooftop sets that run until 3am. Budget: $90-150/night for a solid boho hotel.
The cenotes are mandatory. Rent a moped for $25/day and visit at least three.
GYG pick: Tulum Cenote Snorkel Tour

3. Medellín, Colombia — The City That Reinvented Itself
Colombia's second city is stunning — built into a mountain valley with a cable car system that lifts you above barrios painted in murals. El Poblado neighborhood runs all night. The weather is spring-like year-round (Medellín calls itself the City of Eternal Spring). A good hostel is $18/night. A boutique hotel in El Poblado: $65-90.
Spring break week in Medellín doesn't cost a spring break premium.

4. Lisbon, Portugal — Warm Enough, Cheap Enough, Beautiful Always
March-April in Lisbon means 65°F, almost no tourists, and hotel prices at their lowest. A hostel in Alfama runs $22/night. A mid-range hotel: $75-100. The city is walkable (mostly), the wine costs $3 a glass, and the viewpoints (miradouros) are free.
Sintra is 40 minutes by train and looks like a fairy tale. Go on a weekday.

5. Chiang Mai, Thailand — Culture Trip That Actually Delivers
For the crowd that wants spring break to mean something. Chiang Mai in March: warm, dry, $25/night guesthouses, $3 Pad Thai, elephant sanctuaries, temples at sunrise, cooking classes, night markets. A week here costs less than two nights in Cancún.
GYG pick: Chiang Mai Elephant Sanctuary Day Tour

6. Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic — DR Without the Resort Trap
Most visitors fly into Punta Cana, check into an all-inclusive, and leave without seeing anything real. Las Terrenas, on the Samaná Peninsula, is different — a laid-back beach town with French expats, Italian restaurants, and beaches that aren't shared with 5,000 resort guests. Budget: $60-80/night for a solid studio near the beach.
Hotels: Search Las Terrenas on Booking.com
7. Vietnam — Long Haul That Earns It
If you can get a week and a half (or longer), Vietnam in spring is exceptional. Da Nang has perfect beach weather in March-April. Hội An is one of the most photogenic small towns in the world. A good hotel costs $35-50/night. Street food is $1-3 a meal.
The 15-hour flight is the only argument against it. The experience argues back.
GYG pick: Hội An Ancient Town Private Tour
Hotels: Search Da Nang + Hội An on Booking.com

Bottom Line
Cancún will always be there. These seven places are better — not because they're more sophisticated, but because they're more interesting. The stories you come back with aren't "I went to Señor Frogs." They're the night you ended up at an impromptu rooftop concert in Cartagena, or the morning you swam alone in a cenote before the tour buses arrived.
