Europe Summer 2026: Book Now or Regret It (What's Already Selling Out)

Summer 2026 in Europe is filling up fast. Here's what's already gone, what's going fast, and exactly what to book in the next 30 days.

By May, the decisions are made. Hotels in Santorini sell out in January. Amalfi Coast rooms go in February. Paris during the summer? March is when you realize you waited too long.

We're in late March now. Here's an honest assessment of what you can still get and how to get it.

What's Already Sold Out (or Effectively Gone)

Oia, Santorini: The sunset-view cave hotels with private pools — gone. The ones left are either overpriced ($900+/night) or require a 5-night minimum that doesn't fit your schedule.

Positano, Amalfi Coast: Hotels in Positano itself are sold out at any reasonable price point for July-August. You can still find rooms in Praiano (10 minutes away, 40% cheaper, still gorgeous) or Ravello up the hill.

Amsterdam during Pride (late July): Hotels within walking distance of the canals are gone. The city doubles in price that week.

First-week July in Paris: After summer school breaks start across Europe, Paris becomes extremely expensive and very crowded. Rooms under $200 in a decent arrondissement are rare.

What You Can Still Book (Do It This Week)

Santorini — But Not Oia

Fira, Firostefani, and Imerovigli still have good availability. These villages sit on the caldera too. The sunsets are the same sunset. Prices are 30-50% lower.

Croatia — Still Manageable

Dubrovnik is crowded but not impossible. Split is better — more authentic, easier to navigate, equally beautiful, and a better base for island hopping. Hvar is the party island. Korčula is for people who want to avoid the party island.

Book accommodation in Split and use ferries to day-trip.

Portugal — Lisbon and Porto Are Fine

Both cities have good summer availability compared to their Mediterranean neighbors. Lisbon hotel prices are rising but not at Amalfi levels. Sintra day trips fill up — book those in advance.

Iceland — Midnight Sun Season

June-August is the best time for the midnight sun and highland trekking. Iceland has been getting more expensive but rooms are still available. Book a ring road campervan if you want flexibility without the hotel price spike.

The Greek Islands Beyond Santorini and Mykonos

Naxos: beautiful beaches, a fraction of the price.

Paros: great nightlife, cheaper than Mykonos.

Milos: volcanic beaches unlike anything else in the Aegean, still relatively under the radar.

Sifnos: food scene punches above its weight.

The Practical Booking Checklist

Do immediately:

  • Check flights. Use Skyscanner with "cheapest month" view. Summer 2026 fares to Europe are up 12% year-over-year.
  • Book accommodation before you book flights. You can often cancel hotels for free up to 24-48 hours before arrival. You cannot un-purchase a non-refundable flight.
  • Book experiences. Peak-season GYG tours sell out weeks ahead. The Colosseum, the Uffizi, Sagrada Família — these require advance booking.
  • Book European experiences now →

    Can wait a few weeks:

  • Travel insurance (buy within 14 days of first payment to get cancel-for-any-reason coverage in most policies)
  • Airport transfers
  • Restaurant reservations (except Michelin-starred; those need booking now)
  • Best Value Plays Left

    1. Slovenia — Ljubljana + Lake Bled. Gorgeous, cheap by European standards, and genuinely undervisited.

    2. Albania — The Albanian Riviera is the Mediterranean 15 years ago. Stunning, affordable, increasingly discoverable.

    3. Georgia (the country) — Tbilisi plus the wine region plus mountain hiking. Flights from European hubs are cheap. Hotels are cheap. The food and wine are excellent.

    ---

Summer 2026 will happen whether you've planned it or not. The question is whether you're checking into a closet-sized room at triple normal price in July, or enjoying the suite you booked in March for half that.
