The Garden Route is one of the world's great road trip routes — whale watching, bungee jumping, mountain passes, and the most dramatic coastline in Africa.
South Africa Garden Route Road Trip Guide 2026: Cape Town to Port Elizabeth
The Garden Route is the 300km coastal road between Mossel Bay and Storms River — one of Africa's greatest self-drive routes through a landscape that runs from whale-watching bays to ancient forest to sheer sea cliffs. Most travelers extend the route to begin in Cape Town (400km west) and end in Port Elizabeth (or Gqeberha, 200km east of Storms River).
Cape Town: The Starting Point
Cape Town is one of the world's most spectacular cities — Table Mountain rising directly behind a city that meets two oceans. The Cape Peninsula drive (Chapman's Peak, Cape Point, Boulders Beach penguin colony), the V&A Waterfront, and the wine farms of Constantia and Stellenbosch are the highlights.
Allow: 3 days minimum. 4–5 days to add Winelands.
Hermanus: Whale Capital
A 2-hour drive east of Cape Town, Hermanus offers whale watching from clifftop viewpoints without leaving dry land — one of the world's best land-based whale watching locations. Southern right whales use Walker Bay for calving from July to December.
The Cliff Path Walk (12km along the clifftops) is excellent for whale spotting. The annual Whale Festival is held in October.
Oudtshoorn and the Karoo
An inland detour north from George leads to Oudtshoorn — the ostrich farming capital of the world (South Africa produces most of the world's ostrich leather, feathers, and meat). The Cango Caves (an underground system of stalactite caverns, the longest accessible cave system in South Africa) are 30 minutes north.
Knysna: The Lagoon Town
One of the Garden Route's most beautiful towns — a large lagoon enclosed by two sandstone headlands (The Heads) with the sea visible through the gap. Excellent oysters (Knysna is South Africa's oyster capital), water activities on the lagoon, and the Knysna Forest (one of the last remaining old-growth forests in South Africa, home to the last remaining wild elephants on the Garden Route).
Tsitsikamma: Bungee and Forest
The Tsitsikamma National Park is the most dramatic section of the Garden Route — a coastal reserve with deep river gorges, fynbos heath, and temperate forest running to sea cliffs.
Bloukrans Bridge Bungee: At 216m, the world's highest commercial bungee jump. The free-fall lasts 4.5 seconds. Either side of fear response: €100 well spent.
Storms River Mouth: The Otter Trail (5 days, 42.5km) begins here — South Africa's most famous and most booked hiking trail. Day walks from Storms River Mouth are available without advance booking.
Practical Notes
Car hire: Rent in Cape Town and arrange a one-way drop in Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha or Johannesburg. Most major rental companies allow this.
Safety: The Garden Route is one of South Africa's safest regions for tourists. Standard urban safety awareness applies in town centers.
Best time: April–October for whale watching and walking conditions. December–February is summer (25–30°C) with school holiday crowds.
