Seville is the capital of Andalucia and the heartbeat of Spanish culture — flamenco, bullfighting, tapas culture, and one of the world's great palaces.

Seville Spain Travel Guide 2026: Flamenco, Tapas & the Alcázar

Of all Spain's great cities, Seville is the one most true to the Spanish archetype. It is where flamenco was born and where it remains most authentic. The tapas culture here — where tapas are still, in some bars, served free with your drink — is the most convivial in the country. And the Real Alcázar, the royal palace that has been continuously inhabited for over 700 years, is the most remarkable building in Spain that most visitors have never heard of.

Real Alcázar

The Alcázar is not a single building but a complex of palaces built by successive rulers over 11 centuries, beginning with the Moorish caliphs. The result is a layered architectural conversation between Islamic and Christian traditions, most dramatically expressed in the Mudejar palace built by Pedro I in 1364.

The Patio de las Doncellas: A central courtyard of reflection pools, intricate stucco filigree, and azulejo tiles that distills Moorish palace architecture to its most elegant expression. Game of Thrones used the Alcázar extensively (as the Water Gardens of Dorne) — seeing the real thing against the TV show makes you realize no production design can match it.

The Gardens: Formal gardens terraced over 7 hectares, with fountains, orange trees, and the Pavilion of Carlos V. An afternoon spent wandering is time well used.

Booking: Advance booking is essential. Tickets sell out days ahead in peak season. Book online at alcazarsevilla.org. Night visits are available and particularly atmospheric.

The Cathedral and Giralda

Seville's cathedral is the third-largest in the world (after St. Peter's in Rome and St. Paul's in London). It was built between 1434 and 1517 on the site of a Great Mosque, and the Giralda tower — the original minaret, converted to a bell tower — dominates the skyline at 104m.

The climb to the top of the Giralda is via 35 ramps (not stairs), because the muezzin rode a horse to the top. The view over Seville from the top is the best in the city.

Triana: The Flamenco Barrio

Across the Guadalquivir River from the old city, Triana is where Seville's gypsy community lived and where flamenco was incubated. The Triana market (Mercado de Triana) built into a 16th-century castle site is excellent for breakfast. The street of Alfarería hosts the traditional pottery workshops (azulejos) that have supplied Seville with its tile tradition.

Authentic Flamenco: The tourist tablao shows are theatrical and decent. For something more real, check listings at La Casa del Flamenco (a mid-price tablao in the Barrio Santa Cruz with excellent performers) or ask your hotel about peñas flamencas — private social clubs that occasionally open their performances to outside visitors.

Tapas Culture

Seville's tapas culture is the most generous in Spain.

El Rinconcillo: Founded in 1670, making it Spain's oldest tavern. Jamón, cheese, and wine chalked on the wooden bar counter. Go at noon before the crowds.

Bar Alfalfa: The best-known modern tapas bar in the Santa Cruz district. Queue or arrive at opening (1pm lunch, 8pm evenings).

Mercado Lonja del Barranco: A converted 19th-century market with 20 food stands serving everything from jamón to seafood. Not as authentic as the old bars but good for sampling variety.

When to Visit

October–April: Ideal weather (18–25°C). April brings Semana Santa (Holy Week) — the most intense, atmospheric religious procession in the Catholic world — and then Feria de Abril (the spring fair), when the city erupts in flamenco, horses, and all-night drinking. Both are extraordinary and both completely overwhelm accommodation.

May–September: Very hot (July/August averages 38°C, regularly 42°C+). Worth considering shoulder months of May and September for manageable temperatures.
