San José is not Costa Rica's main attraction — but it is the gateway. Here is how to navigate the capital and launch from it into the country's extraordinary nature.

San José Costa Rica Travel Guide 2026: Gateway to Central America's Best

Most Costa Rica travel guides recommend spending as little time in San José as possible — fly in, transfer to your destination, return through the capital on the way out. This is not entirely wrong; San José is a city where the interesting things are nearby rather than within the city limits.

But the capital has its own rewards: the Gold Museum (the best pre-Columbian collection in Central America), the Central Market, the Teatro Nacional, and the food scene that has improved dramatically in the past decade.

What to Do in San José

Museo del Oro Precolombino (Gold Museum): Underground beneath Plaza de la Cultura. Over 1,600 pre-Columbian gold figurines — jaguars, shamans, frogs — representing the finest metalwork of the indigenous Americas. Outstanding museum, undervisited.

Mercado Central: The covered central market is San José's authentic food space. Gallo pinto (rice and beans) at 6am, fresh casado (rice, beans, meat, salad) at noon, natural fruit juices (mora, tamarindo, guanábana). Prices are a fraction of the tourist restaurants outside.

Teatro Nacional: The 1897 neoclassical theater is San José's most beautiful building, built during the coffee export boom. Interior tours available on non-performance days.

Barrio Amón: The Victorian-era neighborhood north of the center, with restored mansions-turned-boutique-hotels and the most walkable streets in the city.

Day Trips from San José

Poás Volcano: 90 minutes north. One of the most accessible active craters in the world — a paved road leads to the rim viewpoint. The turquoise acidic crater lake and the cloud forest around the summit are extraordinary. Book the mandatory online entry permit ahead.

Irazú Volcano: The highest volcano in Costa Rica (3,432m). On very clear days, both the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are visible from the summit. 1.5 hours from San José.

La Paz Waterfall Gardens: Private wildlife park and waterfall trail 1.5 hours north. The butterfly garden and the cloudy mountain setting are the highlights.

Getting to Destinations

San José is the hub for Costa Rica's transportation network.

Manuel Antonio: Pacific coast beaches + national park. 3.5 hours by Transporte Morales bus or 45-minute flight.

Arenal and La Fortuna: The volcano and lake region. 3 hours by bus or shuttle. Arenal suspension bridges and Mistico Park are the highlights.

Monteverde: The cloud forest reserve, famous for resplendent quetzals (March/April) and hanging bridges. 4 hours from San José, partly on unpaved road.

Tortuguero: Turtle nesting beaches on the Caribbean coast. Accessible only by boat or small plane from San José.

Practical Notes

Currency: Costa Rican colón (CRC). Most tourist establishments accept USD. ATMs are widely available.

Safety: San José's reputation for crime is slightly overstated for tourist areas, but normal city caution applies. Avoid La Merced neighborhood after dark.

Altitude: San José sits at 1,170m — cooler than the coast (20–26°C year-round), but mosquito-free.
