Cebu is the Philippines' second city and the gateway to the Visayas islands — whale shark diving, waterfalls, and some of the best island hopping in Southeast Asia.
Cebu Philippines Travel Guide 2026: Beaches, Whale Sharks & Island Hopping
Cebu is the central hub of the Visayas — the archipelago at the heart of the Philippine islands. From Cebu City, you are 2 hours from whale shark diving (Oslob), 3 hours from Kawasan Falls, and 30 minutes by ferry from Bohol's chocolate hills and tarsier sanctuaries.
Cebu City
The oldest city in the Philippines (founded 1565 by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi) has colonial heritage mixed with a vigorous modern economy.
Fort San Pedro: A triangular fort built in 1565 — the oldest triangular bastion fort in the Philippines. The fort's walls enclose a garden; the museum inside documents the Spanish colonial period.
Magellan's Cross: A cross planted by Ferdinand Magellan in 1521 (the original is inside a hollow cross to protect it from pilgrims who chipped off pieces as relics). Inside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines.
Oslob: Whale Shark Watching
2 hours south of Cebu City, Oslob has become controversial and popular in equal measure. Local fishermen discovered that feeding whale sharks brings them back daily — creating a reliable (if ethically questioned) wildlife encounter where you can swim alongside the world's largest fish.
The ethical question: The feeding artificially alters whale shark behavior and location. Various conservation organizations have criticized the practice. The experience is genuine (whale sharks are real, encounters are face-to-face at 2–5m) and the controversy is legitimate.
Alternative whale shark experience: Donsol in Luzon offers seasonal free-swimming whale shark encounters without feeding (February–May). More natural, less guaranteed.
Kawasan Falls
3 hours south of Cebu City in Badian municipality. A series of three waterfalls — the main fall (20m, turquoise pool) is the most photographed. The canyoneering route from the mountains to the falls (4–5 hours through gorges, cliff jumps, and river swimming) is one of the best adventure activities in the Visayas.
Bohol: The 30-Minute Ferry
From Cebu's Pier 1, ferries run hourly to Tagbilaran in Bohol (90 minutes to 2.5 hours depending on speed). Bohol has three famous features:
Chocolate Hills: 1,268 cone-shaped limestone hills (50–120m high) spread across 50km² that turn chocolate brown in the dry season. The viewing deck above Carmen has the most photographed panorama.
Philippine Tarsier: One of the world's smallest primates. The Philippine Tarsier and Wildlife Sanctuary near Corella protects one of the few remaining wild populations. Quiet, no flash photography, genuinely extraordinary animals.
Panglao Island beaches: 20 minutes from Tagbilaran, Alona Beach on Panglao Island has some of the best snorkeling and diving in the central Visayas.
