Lombok is what Bali was 20 years ago — stunning beaches, world-class surfing, a sacred volcano to climb, and fewer tourists. For now.

Lombok Indonesia Travel Guide 2026: The Bali Alternative That Delivers

Lombok is 35km east of Bali, separated by one of the world's most consequential biogeographic divides (the Wallace Line — the boundary between Asian and Australian species distribution). It is also separated from Bali by about 15 years of tourism development, which makes it simultaneously more authentic and less convenient than its famous neighbor.

The beaches on the Gili Islands (three small islands off Lombok's northwest coast) are arguably more beautiful than anything in Bali. Mount Rinjani (3,726m) is the second-highest volcano in Indonesia and one of Southeast Asia's great trekking destinations. And Kuta Lombok (not to be confused with Kuta Bali) has world-class surf breaks with a fraction of the crowd.

The Gili Islands

Three islands, 15–30 minutes by speedboat from Bangsal harbor on Lombok's northwest coast.

Gili Trawangan (Gili T): The largest and most developed. Beach bars, dive shops, snorkeling, and a nightlife scene that runs to 4am on weekends. Motorcycles are banned on all three islands — transport is by horse cart or bicycle.

Gili Meno: The quiet island. No bars, no nightlife, the most beautiful snorkeling (the underwater turtle statues at the Nest dive site are genuinely enchanting). Best for couples or those seeking genuine escape.

Gili Air: The balance. Enough cafes and beach bars for social life, calm enough for early mornings and clear water. Growing fast in popularity.

Snorkeling and diving: The house reef around all three islands has remarkable turtle populations. Hawksbill and green turtles are near-guaranteed on any snorkel. The channel between Gili T and Gili Meno has strong current for drift diving and healthy shark populations.

Mount Rinjani Trek

The 3,726m volcano is the centerpiece of a national park covering Lombok's northern quarter. The standard trek is 2–3 days up to the crater rim (2,639m) with views over the turquoise crater lake (Segara Anak). The summit push to 3,726m is for the summit days.

Best season: April–October (dry season). The trail is closed November–March for environmental recovery.

Practical: Trek organized through licensed operators in Senaru village (north Lombok) or through Mataram/Senggigi agencies. Porters are available and recommended — the trail is steep and carrying equipment at altitude is demanding.

Kuta Lombok (South Lombok)

Not to be confused with Kuta Bali. Kuta Lombok is a quieter beach town at the base of the southern peninsula, with a cluster of world-class surf breaks and genuinely beautiful bays.

Mawi Beach: 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok by motorbike. A barreling left-hand break for experienced surfers. The access track is rough; the wave is not.

Tanjung Aan: East of Kuta Lombok. Twin bays with powder white sand and crystal water. Less developed than the northern Gili Islands. Bring your own supplies.
