Lake Como is one of Europe's most beautiful lakes — but most visitors only see the tourist strips. Here is how to experience the real lake.
Lake Como Italy Travel Guide 2026: Villas, Villages & Walks
Lake Como is the lake that attracts George Clooney and half the European jet set for good reason. The combination of turquoise Alpine water, 19th-century villa gardens, Italian village architecture, and mountains rising directly from the lake creates a visual perfection that few European landscapes match.
The challenge is that most visitors experience Como or Bellagio — the two main tourist towns — and miss the rest of the lake entirely.
The Lake Structure
Lake Como is shaped like an upside-down Y. Three branches converge at the central point (the "triangle") where Bellagio sits on its promontory. The western branch (Como arm) and eastern branch (Lecco arm) extend south. The northern arm extends up through Tremezzo, Menaggio, Varenna, and eventually into the Alps.
The most beautiful section is the central triangle and the upper lake.
Town by Town
Como: The southern hub, the main transport connection. The walled old town, the Cathedral (a unique fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architecture begun in 1396), and the waterfront promenade are all worth 2–3 hours. Not the best place to stay; better as an arrival/departure point.
Bellagio: The "Pearl of the Lake" — the picture-postcard promontory town where the two main branches of the lake meet. The stepped lanes (scalinate), the villa gardens (Villa Serbelloni, Villa Melzi), and the ferry connections to both shores make it the natural base for exploring the central lake. Extremely busy in summer; much better in May or September.
Varenna: The most underrated town on the lake. Quieter than Bellagio, equally beautiful, with the extraordinary Villa Monastero gardens (botanical collection on the lakefront) and the best viewpoint on the lake from the Castello di Vezio above the town.
Tremezzo: The Villa Carlotta (200-year-old botanical garden, spectacular April–May azalea bloom) is the finest garden on the lake. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is the most romantic accommodation on Lake Como.
Menaggio: A functioning Italian village rather than a pure tourist destination. The access point for hiking into the mountains behind the lake.
Getting Around
The ferry system is the lake's great pleasure — taking a ferry between villages on different sides of the lake, watching the mountains reflect in the water, is the defining Como experience.
The car ferry (traghetto) crosses between Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio every 30 minutes. Walk-on passengers pay €5–8. Excellent for exploring all three central towns in one day.
Villa Gardens
Villa del Balbianello (Lenno): Made famous by Star Wars Episode II and the 2006 Casino Royale. The headland gardens and loggia are extraordinarily beautiful. Reachable only by boat taxi or a 20-minute walk from the road.
Villa Carlotta (Tremezzo): April–May rhododendron and azalea blooms are world-class. The formal Italian garden section is the finest on the lake.
Villa Melzi (Bellagio): English-style landscape garden along the lakefront. Less visited than Carlotta, equally beautiful.
