The Ring Road circles Iceland in 1,332km — the world's most complete showcase of volcanic geology, waterfalls, glaciers, and Arctic light. Here is the complete planning guide.
Iceland Ring Road Self-Drive Guide 2026: Complete Route Around Iceland
Iceland's Route 1 — the Ring Road — circles the entire island in 1,332km, passing through the country's full geological and geographical catalogue: volcanic lava fields, geothermal hot spring areas, glacial rivers, the largest waterfall in Europe by volume, ice cap glaciers, black sand beaches, Arctic tern colonies, and the fjord landscapes of the East and West.
The standard Ring Road trip takes 7–14 days depending on side-trip ambition and pace preferences.
Route Overview by Region
Southwest (Days 1–2): Reykjavík → Golden Circle (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) → Vik
The Golden Circle is the most visited route in Iceland — three UNESCO or significant attractions in a 300km day loop. Þingvellir is where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates diverge visibly (and where Iceland's parliament met from 930 AD to 1798). Geysir's Strokkur geyser erupts every 5–8 minutes. Gullfoss is a 32m two-tier waterfall of extraordinary volume.
South Coast (Days 2–3): Vik → Jökulsárlón → Höfn
The South Coast is the busiest section after the Golden Circle. Skógafoss waterfall (60m drop, climbable to the top via stairs), Reynisfjara black sand beach (the most dramatic beach in Iceland, dangerous waves — stay behind the warning signs), and the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon (icebergs calving from the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier into a tidal lake).
East Fjords (Days 3–4): Höfn → Egilsstaðir → Seyðisfjörður
The East Fjords are Iceland's least visited region — deeply incised glacial fjords with fishing villages and almost no tourist infrastructure. The most peaceful driving of the entire ring road. Seyðisfjörður (accessed via a mountain pass) is the prettiest town in the Eastfjords, with Norwegian-era timber houses and a weekly ferry to Denmark.
North Iceland (Days 4–6): Akureyri → Lake Mývatn → Dettifoss
Akureyri is Iceland's second city (population 19,000 — Iceland's scale is genuinely small). The botanical garden here (at 65.7°N, the northernmost in Europe) surprises visitors with its warmth.
Lake Mývatn is a geothermal area of extraordinary geological activity — pseudocraters, lava pillars (Dimmuborgir), boiling mud pools (Námaskarð), and the Mývatn Nature Baths (similar to the Blue Lagoon but less crowded, less expensive, arguably better).
Dettifoss is Europe's most powerful waterfall by volume — 200m³/second of glacial water dropping 44m. The approach is either a beautiful 1km walk from the east car park or a 30-minute drive from the road.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula (Day 7): The western peninsula centered on Snæfellsjökull glacier (the destination of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth). Kirkjufell mountain (the most photographed mountain in Iceland) is on this peninsula.
Practical Guide
Car rental: A 4WD is recommended for the F-roads (highland interior routes). For the Ring Road itself, a 2WD is sufficient in summer (June–September). In winter, 4WD with winter tires is mandatory.
Accommodation: Book at least 4–6 weeks ahead in peak season (July–August). The Ring Road's most scenic areas have limited accommodation — Jökulsárlón in particular has one guesthouse. Camping (Iceland has excellent campsites accessible with the Camping Card) provides flexibility.
Budget: Iceland is expensive. Budget €150–200/day for two people (mid-range accommodation + food + fuel). The high cost of eating out makes self-catering (Bónus supermarket) a significant saving.
Weather: Change rapidly and significantly. Layers, waterproofs, and flexibility in the itinerary are essential.
