Hanoi is Vietnam's soul city — older, slower, and more layered than Saigon. Here is how to spend your time well in the capital.

Hanoi Complete Travel Guide 2026: Old Quarter, Food & Day Trips

Hanoi has been the soul of Vietnam for a thousand years. Where Ho Chi Minh City accelerates, Hanoi lingers. The Old Quarter's 36 guild streets — each historically selling a single trade — are still partially true to their origins. Pho was invented here. The best egg coffee in the world is here. The lake at the city's center is ringed by willows, temples, and men playing chess on stone benches.

The Old Quarter

The Old Quarter (Hoan Kiem District) is a grid of narrow streets named for the guilds that once operated on them: Hang Bac (Silver Street), Hang Ma (Paper Street), Hang Gai (Silk Street). Today the naming is more historical than literal, but each street retains a distinct character.

Hoan Kiem Lake sits at the Old Quarter's southern edge. The red Huc Bridge leads to Ngoc Son Temple on a small island — one of Hanoi's most photographed views. Best at sunrise before the crowds arrive.

Dong Xuan Market: The city's oldest covered market. Four floors of wholesale goods, fresh produce, and street food stalls on the ground level. Go early (6–8am) for the best atmosphere.

What to Eat

Pho: Hanoi pho is leaner, less sweet, and more complex than its southern counterpart. Essential stops: Pho Bat Dan (queue out the door, cash only, broth that has been simmering since 1955), Pho Gia Truyen Bat Dan.

Bun Cha: The Obama lunch. Chargrilled pork patties and belly in a light broth, served with cold rice vermicelli and fresh herbs. Bun Cha Huong Lien (24 Le Van Huu) was where he ate. Still excellent, slightly more famous than it deserves to be, but worth going.

Banh Cuon: Steamed rice rolls filled with minced pork and wood-ear mushroom. Best eaten at market stalls at 7am.

Egg Coffee (Ca Phe Trung): Invented at Cafe Giang (39 Nguyen Huu Huan) in 1946 when milk was scarce and the owner substituted whipped egg yolk. Rich, custard-like, served in a cup set inside a bowl of hot water. The original is still the best.

Cha Ca La Vong: Tumeric-marinated catfish, fried at your table with dill and spring onions, served with vermicelli and shrimp paste. One of Vietnam's most distinctive dishes. One street in the Old Quarter (Cha Ca Street) is named after it.

Beyond the Old Quarter

Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum: Imposing Soviet-era structure where Ho Chi Minh's embalmed body is displayed. Long queues, mandatory silence, no photography inside. Sobering and worth the visit.

Temple of Literature: Vietnam's first university (1070 AD). Five courtyards, stone turtle stelae, and the most peaceful 90 minutes in central Hanoi.

West Lake (Ho Tay): The city's largest lake is ringed with upscale restaurants, seafood spots, and the Tran Quoc Pagoda — the oldest Buddhist temple in Hanoi (541 AD).

Day Trips

Halong Bay: Vietnam's most famous natural wonder and the country's most-booked tour. 3-hour drive or 4-hour bus from Hanoi. Overnight cruises are the right way to do this — one-day trips feel rushed. Book an overnight junk cruise through a reputable operator.

Ninh Binh: Halong Bay on land. Limestone karsts, rice paddies, boat rides through caves at Trang An and Tam Coc. Doable as a long day trip (90km south), better as an overnight.

Sapa: Mountain trekking, minority hill tribe villages, and dramatic rice terraces. 5-hour train or overnight sleeper. Weekend trains sell out fast — book ahead.

Weather and When to Visit

October–November: Ideal. Mild temperatures (18–25°C), low humidity, occasional light rain. Best overall timing.

March–April: Second best. Warming up, some drizzle, but far more comfortable than summer.

June–August: Hot (35°C+) and humid. Possible typhoons. Not recommended.
