Crete is Greece's largest and most complex island — ancient palaces, Venetian harbors, gorge hikes, and beaches ranging from organized resort to wild and pristine.
Crete Greece Travel Guide 2026: Heraklion, Chania & the South Coast
Crete does not operate on the same scale as other Greek islands. It is 250km wide and has a spine of mountains that reaches 2,456m, dropping to a southern coast that faces Africa rather than the Aegean. The island's north coast is the tourist and transport spine. The south coast is largely roadless, accessible mainly by ferry or on foot, and carries a completely different quality of experience.

Heraklion: Gateway and Minoan Civilization
Heraklion (also spelled Iraklion) is Crete's capital and the port of arrival for most visitors. It is not the island's most charming city but has two non-negotiable attractions.
Knossos Archaeological Site: The Minoan palace complex, Europe's oldest civilization, dating to 1700 BCE. A labyrinthine compound of storerooms, frescoed halls, and sacred spaces that was home to 100,000 people at its peak. Excavated and controversially reconstructed by Arthur Evans from 1900–1935. The reconstructions add visual context but also controversy — go with an archaeological guide to understand what is original and what is Evans's interpretation.
Heraklion Archaeological Museum: The finest collection of Minoan art in the world, including the famous Snake Goddess figurines and the Phaistos Disc. Allow 2 hours.

Chania: The Most Beautiful City on Crete
Chania is the island's second city and by general consensus its most beautiful. The Venetian harbor — a crescent of Venetian-era buildings around a lighthouse and the old shipyards — is particularly lovely at dawn and dusk.
The Old Town: Narrow lanes, Venetian loggia, a covered market (Agora), and the oldest mosque in Greece still standing (the Mosque of the Janissaries, 1645) coexist in a 500m radius.
The Leather Lane (Skrydlof): The old leather-workers' street, still operating, selling the Cretan leather goods (boots, bags) that have been made here for centuries.
Etz Hayyim Synagogue: One of the oldest synagogues in Europe, restored and active despite the complete destruction of Chania's Jewish community in 1944. A moving visit.

The South Coast
Crete's south coast is fundamentally different from the north. No package tourism, minimal infrastructure, often accessible only by boat.
Samaria Gorge: The most famous hike in Greece — a 16km descent through a gorge that narrows to 3m at its narrowest point (the Iron Gates), ending at the village of Agia Roumeli on the southern coast. Bus from Chania to the top, ferry from Agia Roumeli back to Sfakia, bus back to Chania. Long day, genuinely spectacular.
Matala: The village on the south coast famous in the 1970s as a hippie gathering point (the caves in the limestone cliffs were used as homes by international travelers). Still a proper beach town without resort development. Sandy beach, clear water, tavernas, no hotel chains.
Loutro: Car-free, accessible only by ferry or a 3-hour coastal path from Sfakia. A handful of guesthouses, two tavernas, and the clearest water on the island. The ideal Cretan escape.

Food
Cretan cuisine is considered Greece's finest — more complex than mainland Greek food, heavily influenced by Venetian and Ottoman layers.
Dakos (rusks with tomato and feta): The Cretan version of bruschetta, made with barley rusk soaked in water, topped with crushed tomatoes, feta, and olive oil. The base olive oil in Crete is exceptional.
Lamb with stamnagathi: Braised lamb with wild greens unique to Crete. Found at traditional mountain tavernas.
Graviera cheese: Crete's answer to gruyère. Aged sheep's milk cheese, excellent with honey and walnuts.
