Bali has the most consistent, accessible, and varied surf in the world. From the gentle beginners' waves of Kuta to the terrifying Uluwatu reef, this guide covers every break on the island.

Bali Surf Guide: From Beginner Beaches to World-Class Breaks

Bali's south peninsula has a remarkable concentration of quality surf breaks — something for every level, from the learner-friendly beach breaks of Kuta and Seminyak to the terrifying hollow reef waves of Padang Padang and Keramas. The island hosts two world surfing championship events annually, and the year-round swell means that somewhere on the island, something good is always breaking.

Beginner Breaks

Kuta Beach: The original Bali surf scene — gentle, consistent beach break, 200 surf schools along the beach. A 1-hour lesson costs $15-25 including board and instructor. The waves are forgiving and the seabed sandy. Learn here.

Seminyak: Slightly more powerful than Kuta, similar beach break profile. Better for confident beginners who want a bit more push. The beach is less crowded with surf schools than Kuta.

Legian: Between Kuta and Seminyak. The middle-ground option — busier than Seminyak, less chaotic than Kuta peak.

Intermediate Breaks

Canggu (Echo Beach and Batu Bolong): The hip Bali surf scene's current center. Right and left reef/beach break combination. Batu Bolong gets busy but has a forgiving takeoff; Echo Beach is more powerful with a sandbar that produces good barrels at lower tides.

Medewi: A 90-minute drive northwest of Seminyak — a long, rolling left-hand point break suitable for intermediate surfers, rare in its length (the ride can extend 200-300m). Far fewer crowds than the south.

Balangan: A beautiful left-hand reef break inside a protected cove. Best at mid-tide, not too powerful, excellent for confident intermediates.

Expert Breaks

Uluwatu: The iconic left-hand reef break at the base of the Uluwatu cliff. Multiple sections — Peaks, Outside Corner, Racetrack, and the Caves (the closest to the cliff, accessed via a cave in the cliff face). Hollow, powerful, often 4-6 feet, occasionally bigger during large southwest swells. One of the world's classic surf spots.

Padang Padang: The 2010 Eat Pray Love beach, famous in the surf world for its lethal shallowness and power. A slab wave that detonates over a very shallow reef — 6-8 foot Padang can hold 15 of the world's best surfers and reject everyone else. Do not surf here without experience.

Keramas: The east coast's finest break — a powerful right-hand reef, host to the Komune Bali Pro Championship event. Best on large east or southeast swells. Consistent, hollow, not forgiving.

Surf Schools and Camps

Odysseys Surf School (Canggu): The best intermediate/advanced teaching operation on the island. Daily surf guiding takes you to the break appropriate for your level.

Sanur Surf School and Rip Curl School of Surf (Kuta): The reliable big-name options for beginners.

Surf camps: Several multi-day surf camps (accommodation + 2x daily lessons + guided sessions) operate from Canggu and Uluwatu from $100-200/day per person. Worth it if you are committed to improving.

Surf Season

The southwest swell (May-September) is the consistent Balinese surf season — the Bukit Peninsula (Uluwatu, Padang Padang, Balangan) is at its best. The east coast (Keramas, Nusa Dua) works on east swells during the same period.

October-April: The west-facing beaches of Canggu and Seminyak get some swell from northwest winds. Smaller and less consistent, but perfectly rideable.

Board Rental and Etiquette

Board rental: $5-10/day for a longboard or softboard in Kuta; $10-20/day for performance boards from shops in Canggu.

Surf etiquette: The person deepest and closest to the breaking wave has priority. Do not drop in (take a wave when someone else is already riding it). The Uluwatu lineup has locals who enforce this aggressively.
