The W Trek in Torres del Paine is one of Earth's great hiking experiences — three days of glaciers, granite towers, turquoise lakes, and wind that will knock you sideways. Here is exactly how to plan it.
Patagonia: The World's Most Spectacular Hike (And How to Actually Do It)
The granite towers of Torres del Paine rise 2,850 meters above the Patagonian steppe in a geological formation so dramatic that it looks like a Hollywood set designer's overreach. They are real. Standing at the Mirador Base Torres at sunrise, with the sky turning pink behind the three vertical spires, is one of the most extraordinary moments available to a person who walks.
The W Trek: What It Is
The W Trek (named for its shape on the map) is a 4-5 day circuit through Torres del Paine National Park covering approximately 80km. It passes through three main areas: the Torres (the granite towers), the Valle del Francés (a hanging glacier valley), and the Grey Glacier (a calving glacier with blue icebergs).
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous. No technical climbing. Total elevation gain approximately 3,500 meters. The wind in Patagonia is the real challenge — sustained 60km/h with gusts to 120km/h is not uncommon. It has knocked hikers over.
When to Go
October-November: Early season. Fewer hikers, unpredictable weather, some facilities still opening. Wild rheas and guanacos abundant.
December-January: Peak season. Crowds at refugios, booking required 6+ months in advance. Best weather probability (which still means 40% chance of wind and rain on any given day — this is Patagonia).
February-March: Shoulder/late season. Trails less crowded, beautiful autumn colors in March, reliable enough weather. The best balance for most hikers.
April-September: The park partially closes. The W Trek is not recommended.
Booking Accommodation
The W Trek accommodation consists of:
Refugios (mountain huts): Bunks, meals, showers. Operated by Vertice Patagonia and CONAF. Book through their websites 6-12 months in advance for December-January.
Camping: Both free CONAF campsites and fee-based refugio camping areas. Bring a 4-season tent — the wind regularly destroys lesser equipment.
Full traversal packages: Several operators offer guided W Trek packages including all accommodation and meals from approximately $800-$1,200 per person for 4-5 days. These book out earliest.
Getting There
Puerto Natales is the gateway town — 112km south of the park. Fly to Punta Arenas (3 hours from Santiago), then bus to Puerto Natales (3 hours). Direct buses from Puerto Natales to the park entrance run twice daily.
Alternatively: bus from Puerto Natales to Ushuaia (Argentina) and do the Beagle Channel day trip while you are at the end of the world.

The Mirador Base Torres
The climax of the W Trek. A 4-hour hike from Refugio Las Torres ascending through beech forest and over a glacial moraine to the base of the three towers. The turquoise glacial lake at the base reflects the towers in calm conditions. Arrive for sunrise — set your alarm for 4:30 AM.
The return descent takes 3 hours. Start the full hike by 5 AM if staying at the refugio. The tower views are clearest in the morning before cloud builds.
The Grey Glacier
On the western arm of the W, the path reaches a viewpoint overlooking the 270 square kilometer Grey Glacier. Blue icebergs calve into Lake Grey below. In high season, kayaking tours operate on the lake. The most otherworldly landscape of the entire trek.
