Glaciers, fjords, bungy jumps, and the most scenic drives on Earth. This South Island road trip delivers nonstop adventure across middle-earth landscapes.

New Zealand South Island: The Ultimate 10-Day Adventure Itinerary

New Zealand's South Island packs more adventure per square kilometer than anywhere else on Earth. Glacier hiking, bungy jumping, jet boating, skydiving, world-class hiking — all set against Lord of the Rings landscapes that look digitally enhanced but are entirely real.

This 10-day road trip covers the South Island's greatest hits while leaving room for spontaneous adventure.

Pre-Trip Planning

Car Rental: Book a reliable SUV or campervan through Apex Rentals or Jucy. Many iconic spots require gravel road access. Campervans allow flexible accommodation but are slower on mountain roads.

Season: November–March (summer) offers best weather and longest days. December–February is peak season with higher prices. March–April brings autumn colors and smaller crowds.

Insurance: New Zealand ACC (accident compensation) covers injuries, but comprehensive rental car insurance is essential for gravel road damage.

Day 1: Christchurch to Arthur's Pass

Distance: 150 km (2 hours)

Land in Christchurch, collect your rental car, and drive west through the Canterbury Plains toward the Southern Alps. Arthur's Pass National Park is your gateway to the mountains.

Activities:

  • Castle Hill — limestone boulder formations used as Narnia filming location
  • Arthur's Pass Village — grab lunch and fuel
  • Devil's Punchbowl Falls — 1-hour return hike to a 131-meter waterfall
  • Stay: Arthur's Pass Village (Wilderness Lodge or backcountry huts)

Day 2: Arthur's Pass to Franz Josef Glacier

    Distance: 200 km (3 hours via SH73 and SH6)

Cross the Alps and descend the West Coast. The drive itself is spectacular — rainforests, coastal cliffs, and glacier valleys.

    Activities:

  • Hokitika Gorge — impossibly turquoise water
  • Franz Josef Glacier half-day heli-hike ($450) — land on the glacier and walk through ice caves
  • Stay: Franz Josef Village (Te Waonui Forest Retreat or hostels)

Day 3: Franz Josef to Fox Glacier and Beyond

Distance: 25 km to Fox Glacier + 120 km to Lake Matheson

Morning: Second glacier day. Choose between:

  • Fox Glacier heli-hike
  • Skydiving over the glaciers ($350, 12,000 ft)
  • Glacier valley walk (free)
  • Afternoon: Drive to Lake Matheson for sunset. The "mirror lake" reflects Mount Cook and Mount Tasman in perfect stillness.

Stay: Fox Glacier or Lake Matheson area

Day 4: Fox Glacier to Wanaka

    Distance: 260 km (4 hours)

The drive south follows the coast before turning inland toward Wanaka. Stop at the Blue Pools (30-minute walk to crystal-clear swimming holes) and Knight's Point lookout.

    Wanaka Activities:

  • Roys Peak hike (6 hours return, Instagram famous viewpoint)
  • That Wanaka Tree (most photographed tree in NZ)
  • Puzzling World (if you need a rest day)
  • Stay: Wanaka (lakeside accommodation)

    Day 5: Wanaka to Queenstown

Distance: 100 km (1.5 hours via Crown Range Road)

Take the Crown Range Road — New Zealand's highest sealed road — for dramatic alpine scenery.

    Queenstown Activities:

  • Bungy jump at Kawarau Bridge ($205) — world's first commercial bungy
  • Skyline Gondola and luge runs
  • Fergburger dinner (cult-status burgers, expect lines)
  • Stay: Queenstown

    Day 6: Queenstown Adventure Day

A full day in the adventure capital. Choose your intensity:

    High Adrenaline:

  • Nevis Bungy (134m, NZ's highest, $275)
  • Canyon Swing (world's highest cliff jump, $250)
  • Shotover Jet (jet boat through narrow canyons, $160)
  • Medium Intensity:

  • Milford Sound day trip ($200 bus + cruise)
  • Paragliding over Queenstown ($250)
  • Mountain biking Skyline trails
  • Low Intensity:

  • Arrowtown historic village walk
  • Wine tasting in Gibbston Valley
  • Onsen Hot Pools sunset session ($90)
  • Stay: Queenstown

Day 7: Queenstown to Te Anau and Milford Sound

Distance: 170 km to Te Anau + 120 km to Milford Sound

If you did not take the Milford day trip from Queenstown, today is the day. The Milford Road is one of Earth's most scenic drives.

    Activities:

  • Mirror Lakes (roadside stop)
  • The Chasm (20-minute walk)
  • Milford Sound cruise (2 hours, $90–200)
  • Kayaking Milford Sound (half-day, $130)
  • Stay: Te Anau (the gateway town)

Day 8: Te Anau to Dunedin via Catlins Coast

Distance: 350 km (5–6 hours with stops)

The Catlins — a remote coastal region between Te Anau and Dunedin — is South Island's hidden gem. Few tourists venture here, despite world-class wildlife.

    Catlins Highlights:

  • Curio Bay — petrified forest and yellow-eyed penguin colony (dawn or dusk)
  • Cathedral Caves — accessible only at low tide
  • Nugget Point Lighthouse — iconic rocky outcrop
  • Purakaunui Falls — three-tiered waterfall
  • Stay: Dunedin

Day 9: Dunedin and Otago Peninsula

Morning: Explore Dunedin's Scottish heritage — the Octagon, Speight's Brewery, and Baldwin Street (world's steepest).

    Afternoon: Otago Peninsula wildlife:

  • Royal Albatross Centre — only mainland albatross colony in the world
  • Sandfly Bay — yellow-eyed penguin viewing (free, but maintain distance)
  • Larnach Castle — Victorian castle with harbor views
  • Stay: Dunedin

Day 10: Dunedin to Christchurch via Mount Cook

    Distance: 360 km (5 hours)

Your final drive loops inland through Oamaru (blue penguin colony) and Twizel (access point for Mount Cook National Park).

    Optional Mount Cook Additions:

  • Tasman Glacier terminal lake boat tour ($160)
  • Hooker Valley Track (3-hour return, flat walk to glacier views)
  • Scenic flight over Mount Cook ($250–500)
  • Arrive Christchurch for evening departure.

    Packing Essentials

  • Layers: Weather changes hourly. Pack merino base layers, fleece, and rain jacket.
  • Hiking boots: Essential for glacier walks and alpine tracks.
  • Sunscreen: NZ sun is intense — SPF 50+ mandatory.
  • Insect repellent: Sandflies are vicious on the West Coast.
  • Power adapter: New Zealand uses Type I plugs.
  • Driving Tips

  • Left-hand traffic: Take it slow on your first day.
  • Single-lane bridges: Give way to oncoming traffic if arrows point toward you.
  • Gravel roads: Reduce speed and increase following distance.
  • Fuel planning: Top up whenever below half tank — rural areas have few stations.
  • Wildlife: Penguins, seals, and keas (alpine parrots) cross roads. Watch for them.
  • New Zealand rewards travelers who embrace adventure and flexibility. This itinerary hits the highlights, but leave room for the unexpected — a waterfall that demands a detour, a viewpoint that requires an extra hour, a local's recommendation that leads somewhere magical.
