Maldives, Bali, and Phuket get all the attention. But these 10 beach destinations offer equally stunning water, fewer crowds, and dramatically lower prices. Time to update your list.

10 Underrated Beach Destinations That Beat the Overrated Ones

Every year, the same beaches fill beyond capacity: Bali in July, Koh Samui in January, Santorini in August. Meanwhile, these destinations — equally beautiful, often more pristine — sit quietly.

1. Milos, Greece

The island that has more naturally occurring colors in its rock formations than anywhere in the Mediterranean. The Sarakiniko beach (white volcanic rock formations sculpted into alien shapes by wind and sea) is unlike any other beach in Europe. The fishing village of Klima has fishermen's houses painted in candy colors built directly into the cliff. Catacombs below ground, cave churches above. Fewer than 200,000 visitors per year vs Santorini's 3.5 million.

2. Palawan, Philippines

The western Philippine island consistently rates in global "best beach" surveys and still receives a fraction of Boracay's visitors. El Nido's limestone karst lagoons (the Big Lagoon, Hidden Lagoon, Secret Beach) are among the most beautiful water landscapes in the world. Coron's wreck diving is world-class.

3. Comporta, Portugal

Two hours south of Lisbon. 40km of undeveloped Atlantic beach bordered by rice paddies and cork oak forest. A cult destination for Lisboetas and a growing international crowd that has not yet overwhelmed the village atmosphere. Beach shacks serving grilled fish and cold vinho verde.

4. Mozambique

The Bazaruto Archipelago — six islands in the Mozambique Channel — has coral reefs in excellent condition, dugongs (sea cows) visible at certain sites, and beach lodges that combine barefoot luxury with genuine wilderness. Getting here requires effort (Johannesburg connections to Vilankulo). That effort keeps the crowds away.

5. São Tomé and Príncipe

Two volcanic islands in the Gulf of Guinea, barely 300km from the equator. Formerly Portuguese, now independent. The cocoa plantations of the old roças (estates) have been converted to eco-lodges. The beaches of Príncipe are among the most beautiful and least-visited in the Atlantic.

6. Koh Yao Noi, Thailand

The small island between Phuket and Krabi has the same Andaman Sea turquoise water as Phi Phi with none of Phi Phi's party boats and noise. Rubber plantations, villages of Muslim Thai fishermen, cycling through countryside. Sea kayaking through mangroves. The perfect antidote to Phuket.

7. Isola d'Elba, Italy

Napoleon's island of exile. 147km of coastline, crystalline Tyrrhenian water, medieval hilltop villages, and the best beaches in Tuscany. Accessible by ferry from Piombino (45 minutes). Vastly less visited than Sardinia or Sicily, equally beautiful.

8. Musandam Peninsula, Oman

The Omani exclave on the Strait of Hormuz — dramatic fjords (called khors locally) carved into desert mountains, with water so clear that dolphins and whale sharks are visible from dhow (traditional wooden boat) tours. 90 minutes from Dubai by road.

9. Roatan, Honduras

The largest of the Bay Islands off the Honduran coast. The second-largest barrier reef in the world (Mesoamerican Barrier Reef) wraps around the south and west of the island. PADI certification costs $200 (vs $400+ in the Maldives). Beach bungalows from $50/night.

10. Aitutaki, Cook Islands

The most beautiful lagoon in the Pacific, according to approximately everyone who has been there. A raised coral atoll with a turquoise lagoon the size of a city — warm, crystal clear, populated by fish so tame they swim between your feet. [New Zealand](/destinations/new-zealand) has a direct air connection from Auckland. Otherworldly.
