Visa for Oman

  • Free 10-day e-visa: Available for most Western passports via e.gov.om
  • Paid 30-day visa: ~$50 USD — extendable
  • Visa on arrival: Available at Muscat Airport for many nationalities
  • Apply at least 48 hours before travel.

    Currency & Money

  • Currency: Omani Rial (OMR). 1 OMR ≈ 2.60 USD — one of the world's highest-value currencies
  • ATMs are widely available in cities
  • Cards accepted in most hotels and restaurants
  • Cash needed for souqs, small restaurants, and rural areas
  • Dress Code

Oman is more relaxed than some Gulf neighbours, but respect is key:

  • Outside tourist areas: cover shoulders and knees
  • Mosques: women need a headscarf + abaya (often provided)
  • Beaches: swimwear is fine at beach resorts
  • Ramadan Etiquette

If visiting during Ramadan: avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours. Restaurants typically open after sunset. Many attractions keep regular hours.

    Safety

Oman is exceptionally safe. Crime rates are very low. Driving is the primary safety concern — road accidents happen, especially on mountain roads. Drive conservatively.

    Health

  • No vaccinations formally required
  • Water: stick to bottled in rural areas; tap water in Muscat is generally fine
  • Sun: intense — sunscreen, hat, and hydration are essential
  • Health insurance strongly recommended
  • Transport Tips

  • 4WD is mandatory above the checkpoint on Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams
  • Google Maps works well in Oman
  • Petrol is cheap by global standards (~OMR 0.17/litre)
  • Top 5 Things That Surprise First-Time Visitors

    2. The diversity of landscape in a single country

    3. How empty the roads and beaches are

    4. The quality of Omani food (especially the seafood)

    5. How cool the nights get in the desert and mountains
