The Maldives is synonymous with overwater bungalows and five-figure hotel bills. But local islands have changed everything. Here is how to do the Maldives on $100–150 per day.
The Maldives Without the $1,500/Night Price Tag: A Real Budget Guide
The Maldives is synonymous with overwater bungalows and invoices that require a second mortgage. The Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru starts at $1,800 per night. Soneva Jani runs $4,000+.
But since the Maldives opened local islands to tourism in 2009, a parallel travel economy has grown that most bloggers ignore because it's not photogenic enough for their Instagram accounts.
Here is the real budget version.
The Two Maldives
Resort islands: Private atolls where one resort occupies the entire island. Alcohol sold. Isolated. Spectacular. $500–5,000+/night.
Local islands: Inhabited islands with guesthouses, local restaurants, and community life. Alcohol generally not available on the island (buy duty-free at the airport). Much cheaper. Still beautiful.
The water and reefs are the same. The sunsets are identical. The sand is the same powdered white.
Getting There
Fly into Malé/Velana International Airport (MLE). Almost all international flights route through here. Turkish Airlines, Emirates, Qatar, and Sri Lankan Airlines are often the most competitive on price from North America and Europe.
Getting Around: Speed Boats vs Seaplanes
Seaplanes are the iconic transfer to private resorts. They're also $300–800 each way per person.
Speed boats to local islands run $5–20 one-way depending on distance. Maafushi Island, the most popular budget destination, is 45 minutes by speed boat from Malé and costs $10–15.
Public ferry from Malé to Maafushi: 8 MAD (less than $1), but runs only 2–3 times daily and takes 2+ hours.
Where to Stay: Local Islands
Maafushi: The most developed local island for tourism. 20–30 guesthouses. Diving, snorkeling, surfing. Full services.
Thulusdhoo: Famous surf island. Corona surf break is world-class. Fewer tourists than Maafushi.
Fulidhoo: Tiny, quiet. One of the most beautiful beaches in the Maldives. Few guesthouses, extremely peaceful.
Dhigurah: Long island, whale shark snorkeling nearby. Less visited.
Budget guesthouse cost: $50–100/night for a private room with AC and breakfast on Maafushi. Comparable amenities to a $400 resort room minus the overwater feature.
What to Do (For Less)
Snorkeling: Grab fins from your guesthouse (usually free or $3/day) and walk into the water. House reefs on most local islands have excellent coral and fish. No boat required.
Diving: Local dive operators on Maafushi charge $40–60/dive including equipment — vs $150–250 at private resorts.
Whale shark snorkeling: South Ari Atoll is the world's best place to swim with whale sharks year-round. A day trip from Maafushi runs $60–90/person. From a private resort: $200+.
Sunset fishing: Traditional Maldivian hand-line fishing at sunset. Local operators charge $20–30/person. One of the best experiences in the country.
Bikini beach: Local islands have designated bikini beaches (foreigners-only zones where swimwear is permitted). Main beaches on the inhabited side are modest-dress. Ask your guesthouse for the bikini beach location.
Where to Eat
Local restaurants (haveeru dhoni) serve Maldivian food: tuna curry, mas riha (fish curry), fresh coconut, roshi (flatbread). Meals run $3–8.
Guesthouses offer set lunch/dinner menus for $10–15. Often your best value for included meals.
Western food is available but costs 2–3x local cuisine.
Pro tip: Alcohol is not sold on local islands. Buy duty-free at the airport (2 liters allowed). Or accept that some trips are better dry.
Realistic 7-Day Budget
| Expense | Cost |
|---|---|
| Flight (economy, mid-season) | $600–900 |
| Accommodation (7 nights) | $350–700 |
| Transfers (speed boats) | $30–60 |
| Food (local + some guesthouse meals) | $150–250 |
| Activities (snorkeling, diving, whale sharks) | $150–250 |
| Total | $1,280–2,160 |
Compare that to 7 nights at a mid-range resort: $7,000–15,000+.
The Real Tradeoff
You won't have an overwater bungalow. You won't have a swim-up bar. The sunrise won't be completely private.
What you will have: the same Indian Ocean. The same marine life. The same color of water that looks CGI'd. And 80–90% of your money back.
