London is the most visited city in the world, and with good reason — it has more free world-class museums than any other city, extraordinary food, and a culture of creative reinvention that keeps it perpetually current.

London for First-Timers: The Complete Guide to the World's Most Visited City

London is the most visited city on Earth, and the question is why so many people return. The answer is that London is not one city — it is 33 boroughs, each with a distinct personality, and a lifetime is insufficient to know it properly.

The Essential Free Museums

London's national museums are almost universally free of charge. This is extraordinary.

The British Museum: Holds 8 million objects from across human civilization. The Elgin Marbles (Parthenon sculptures from Athens — their presence in London is disputed), the Rosetta Stone, the Lewis Chessmen. Spend an entire day. The Great Court (Foster + Partners) is one of London's finest interior spaces.

The National Gallery: Trafalgar Square, free, 2,300 paintings from the 13th-21st century. The van Eyck Arnolfini Portrait. The Raphael The Miraculous Draught of Fishes. The Monet series and Seurat's Bathers at Asnières. Free.

The Victoria & Albert Museum: The world's largest museum of decorative arts and design. The Cast Courts (full-size plaster casts of Michelangelo's David and Trajan's Column among others), the Fashion Gallery, the Raphael Cartoons. Free.

The Natural History Museum: The dinosaur gallery, the Blue Whale, the Earth Galleries with their earthquake simulator. One of the most beautiful Victorian buildings in London. Free.

Tate Modern: The former Bankside Power Station houses the national collection of modern and contemporary art. The Turbine Hall installations by artists including Ai Weiwei and Olafur Eliasson are among the most impactful art experiences in London. Free (exhibitions extra).

The Paid Experiences Worth It

Tower of London: The 1,000-year history of the fortress, the Crown Jewels (including the 105-carat Koh-i-Noor diamond), and the Yeoman Warder tours. £34, book online.

Churchill War Rooms: The underground bunker from which Churchill directed World War II, preserved exactly as it was in 1945. One of the most compelling historical sites in Britain. £28.

Shakespeare's Globe: The faithful reconstruction of the 1599 Globe Theatre. Standing "groundling" tickets (as they were in Shakespeare's time) cost £5-10 and put you 3 meters from the stage. Sit-down tickets are £25-50. The summer season runs May-October.

The Neighborhoods

Notting Hill: The white stucco townhouses, Portobello Road Market (Saturday for antiques, Friday for food), and the Michelin-starred restaurants of Westbourne Grove.

Shoreditch: East London's creative quarter. Street art, independent galleries, the best coffee in London (Climpson & Sons, The Roastery), and vintage shops on Brick Lane.

Borough Market: The best food market in London, under London Bridge. Arrive hungry at 11 AM.

Greenwich: The Prime Meridian, the Royal Observatory, the Cutty Sark (the last surviving tea clipper), and views across the Thames to Canary Wharf. Accessible by riverboat from Westminster — the journey itself is excellent.

Hampstead: A village inside London, 4km from Euston. Hampstead Heath (320 acres of woodland with views over the entire city from Parliament Hill), Kenwood House (English Heritage, free, Rembrandt and Turner collection), and the pubs of Flask Walk.

Eating in London

London's food scene has transformed in 20 years from the punchline of European cuisine jokes into one of the world's most diverse and interesting restaurant cities.

Borough Market: The Saturday food market experience. St. John's Bread and Wine (fergus henderson's offal restaurant) is nearby. The Market Café within Borough has excellent breakfast.

Dishoom: Indian food inspired by the Irani cafés of Bombay. The best breakfast naan (bacon, egg, cream cheese, chili jam in a flatbread) and house black daal in London. Queue or book (always busy).

The Ledbury: Notting Hill restaurant by Brett Graham, two Michelin stars. The best tasting menu in London at the mid-range luxury tier.

Street food: Street Feast markets (Dinerama, Hawker House) operate Thursday-Sunday evenings in various London locations. The quality is restaurant-grade; the prices are manageable.

Practical Tips

Oyster Card: The contactless transit card for the Underground, buses, and Overground. Load £20 at any station. Tap in and out of every journey. The daily cap (Zone 1-2: £8.10) means you never overpay regardless of how many journeys you make.

Taxis: Black cabs are expensive (£10+ for a short journey) but legitimate. Uber is cheaper. Never take an unlicensed minicab that approaches you.

Best time: May-June and September for good weather and manageable crowds. December for Christmas lights and markets. July-August is crowded but the parks and outdoor spaces are at their best.
