Sakura season runs roughly late March through mid-April. Here's how to be in the right place at the right time — with hotel options that aren't already sold out.

Hanami — the tradition of sitting under blooming cherry trees with good food, good drinks, and good company — is one of the genuinely transcendent travel experiences. For one to two weeks each spring, Japan's parks turn pink, the streets smell faintly sweet, and entire cities pause to look up at the trees.

Here's how to do it right.

The Bloom Schedule (2026 Projections)

Cherry blossoms follow the temperature north. In a typical year:

| City | Peak Bloom |

|------|-----------|

| Tokyo | Late March – Early April |

| Kyoto | Late March – Early April |

| Osaka | Early April |

| Hiroshima | Late March |

| Nara | Late March – Early April |

| Nikko | Mid-April |

| Sendai | Mid-April |

| Sapporo (Hokkaido) | Early–Late May |

2026 note: Climate patterns suggest peak bloom in Tokyo/Kyoto will likely be March 28 – April 5. Watch the Japan Meteorological Corporation's forecast (released in early February) for exact projections.

Where to Watch: Best Spots by City

Tokyo

Shinjuku Gyoen: The gold standard. Multiple cherry tree varieties bloom at slightly different times, extending the season. Entry: ¥500. Get there early — lines form by 9am.

Chidorigafuchi Moat: Night viewing (yozakura) with illuminated blossoms reflecting in the moat. Free. Lines form at dusk.

Ueno Park: The traditional hanami site — big crowds, blue tarp picnics, food stalls everywhere. Chaotic but genuinely fun.

Kyoto

Maruyama Park: The iconic weeping cherry tree. Lit up at night. Arrive at sunset for the best light.

Philosopher's Path: A canal-side walk lined with cherry trees. 2km, connects two temples. Go in the morning before the crowds.

Kiyomizudera Temple: Cherry blossoms with a mountain backdrop and the temple's wooden stage. One of the most photographed spring scenes in Japan.

Outside the Main Circuit

Hirosaki Castle (Aomori): Mid-to-late April. A castle surrounded by 2,600 cherry trees, petals floating in the moat. Less crowded than Tokyo or Kyoto. Worth the trip.

Takato, Nagano: "Japan's number one cherry blossom spot" according to Japanese tourism rankings. 1,500 Takato Kohigan cherry trees — smaller, more intensely pink than standard varieties.

Accommodation Strategy (This Requires Action Now)

Sakura season hotels in Tokyo and Kyoto book up months ahead. The situation in late March:

Tokyo: Availability exists but prices are 2-3x normal. The best move at this point is to look at Yokohama (30 minutes by train, same cherry blossom access, significantly cheaper) or budget accommodations in less central neighborhoods.

Kyoto: Traditional ryokan with breakfast during peak sakura: ¥30,000-50,000/night ($200-330). Book whatever remains immediately.

Practical Logistics

JR Pass: For a 2-week trip covering Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hiroshima, the 14-day JR Pass (¥50,000/$330) pays for itself. Buy before arriving in Japan — it costs more in-country.

IC Card: Load a Suica or Pasmo card at the airport. Tap in/out on every subway. No thinking required.

Crowds: Weekdays are 40-50% less crowded than weekends during peak bloom. If you can shift even one day, shift to a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Food during hanami: The convenience stores (konbini) sell some of the best food in Japan. Lawson, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart during sakura season stock limited-edition items that are genuinely excellent. Take them to the park.

The Best Spring Itinerary (10 Days)

  • Days 1-3: Tokyo — Shinjuku Gyoen, Chidorigafuchi, Ueno
  • Day 4: Day trip to Nikko or Kamakura
  • Day 5: Shinkansen to Kyoto
  • Days 6-8: Kyoto + Nara day trip
  • Day 9: Day trip to Hiroshima + Miyajima
  • Day 10: Osaka, then flight home

    ---

Sakura season has a specific quality that's hard to describe until you've experienced it. The combination of the brevity of the bloom (7-10 days at peak), the Japanese cultural weight attached to the moment, and the actual beauty of the trees creates something that lands differently than most travel experiences.

It's worth the crowds. Plan now.
