First class on the wrong airline is an expensive disappointment. First class on the right airline — Emirates A380, Singapore Suites, or Etihad Residence — is a genuinely transformative experience. Here is where to spend your points.

The World's Best First Class Airlines: Where to Spend Your Miles

Most people have never flown first class and assume it is simply a bigger seat. It is not. The gap between business class and first class on the world's top airlines is as large as the gap between economy and business. Private suites with closing doors, onboard bars, shower facilities at 40,000 feet, multi-course meals with sommelier service — and with the right points strategy, available for $50 in taxes.

1. Singapore Airlines Suites (A380)

The benchmark. Singapore Airlines' A380 first class suites are private rooms with doors that close completely — 1.2m×2.4m of personal space at 35,000 feet. A double bed configuration is available on certain routes for couples. The cabin crew-to-suite ratio is approximately 1:3.

The food: A full dinner service with a menu designed with the input of a panel of renowned international chefs. Champagne (vintage, appropriate for the route): Krug, Pommery, or Moët in 2024 configurations. Caviar on long-haul routes.

Award redemption: 62,500 KrisFlyer miles one-way Singapore to London (or New York to Singapore via Tokyo). Transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards at 1:1 or Amex Membership Rewards at 1:1.5 (less favorable — go through Chase if possible).

Value: Cash price London-Singapore Suites: $10,000-18,000. Award price: 67,500 KrisFlyer miles + $150 taxes.

2. Emirates First Class (A380)

The most theatrical first class product in aviation. The Emirates A380 first class cabin has 14 private suites, an onboard bar (The Lounge), and — uniquely — shower suites. Yes, shower suites. A private shower cabin at 40,000 feet, with 5 minutes of hot water, designer toiletries, and a changing room. On the A380.

Award redemption: Emirates First class is redeemable on Qantas Frequent Flyer miles (points transferred from Amex at 2:1 ratio). [Sydney](/destinations/sydney) to Dubai in Emirates First: 128,000 Qantas points. Not cheap in points, but extraordinary value against the $15,000+ cash price.

The limitation: Emirates award space in first class is notoriously limited. Book immediately when space opens (typically 355 days ahead) or search for last-minute release (within 2 weeks of departure).

3. Etihad The Residence

A single-seat, single-suite class for one. On select A380 routes (London Heathrow to Abu Dhabi): a two-room suite with a separate bedroom (double bed), living room, and dedicated butler for the entire flight. Served by a personal chef who prepares meals to order.

Cost: The Residence retails for $21,000 one-way London to Abu Dhabi. Award availability is extremely limited — contact Etihad directly.

4. ANA First Class (The Suite)

ANA's new First Suite product on 777-9 aircraft connecting Tokyo to New York and London. A 1.5m×2.1m private suite with a door, convertible to a double bed, with a window (the only first class product where the suite has a direct exterior window). Extraordinary Japanese service tradition applied to an otherwise already excellent product.

Award redemption: The most valuable transfer in the program: Amex Membership Rewards → ANA Mileage Club at 1:1. Tokyo to New York in ANA First: 75,000 ANA miles one-way. Retail: $8,000-12,000.

🌍 First class is within reach with the right strategy. [Find cheap flights →](https://www.aviasales.com/?marker=4132) for positioning flights and [book hotels →](https://www.booking.com/searchresults.html?ss=Tokyo&aid=YOUR_BOOKING_AFFILIATE_ID) at your destination.

5. Cathay Pacific First Class

The most underrated first class product. Cathay's first class on 777 aircraft has private suites (not as large as Singapore Suites but still private), excellent Cantonese and Western dining, and the finest sommelier service in aviation.

Award redemption: Alaska Mileage Plan miles can be used for Cathay Pacific first class at excellent rates (50,000 miles one-way Asia to North America) — one of the best remaining value redemptions in the program.

The Points Strategy

The common thread: you need points transferable to these programs. The priority:

1. American Express Membership Rewards: Transfers to ANA (1:1), Singapore KrisFlyer (1:1.5), Cathay Asia Miles (1:1), and more

2. Chase Ultimate Rewards: Transfers to Singapore KrisFlyer (1:1) — the most valuable single transfer in the program

Build points through welcome bonuses (not through everyday spend, which rarely accumulates fast enough). A single Amex Platinum welcome bonus (80,000 points) transfers to 80,000 Singapore KrisFlyer miles — enough for a one-way Singapore Suites to London.
