The Chase Trifecta is three credit cards that work together to earn 3–5x points on every purchase. Here is the system that funds most of my travel.

How to Use the Chase Trifecta to Travel for Nearly Free

The Chase Trifecta is the most powerful credit card strategy for earning flexible travel points. It is three Chase cards that work together to earn 3–5x Ultimate Rewards points on virtually every purchase category. I have been using this system for 5 years and it funds 80% of my travel.

Here is how it works.

What Is the Chase Trifecta?

The Chase Trifecta combines three cards to maximize earning across all spending categories:

1. Chase Sapphire Reserve (or Sapphire Preferred)

2. Chase Freedom Unlimited

3. Chase Freedom Flex

Each card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards points. The magic: you can combine points from all three cards and redeem them through the Sapphire Reserve for premium travel.

The Three Cards

1. Chase Sapphire Reserve: The Premium Card

Annual fee: $550

Earning rates:

  • 10x on hotels and car rentals (booked through Chase Travel Portal)
  • 10x on dining (including takeout and delivery via Chase Dining)
  • 5x on flights (booked through Chase Travel)
  • 3x on other travel and dining
  • 1x on everything else
  • Why you need it: The Sapphire Reserve allows you to transfer points 1:1 to airline and hotel partners (Hyatt, United, Singapore Airlines, etc.). It also gives you a 1.5x redemption multiplier when booking travel through the Chase Travel Portal.

Credits that offset the annual fee:

  • $300 annual travel credit (automatic, applies to any travel purchase)
  • $100 Global Entry/TSA PreCheck credit (every 4 years)
  • Effective annual fee after credits: $550 - $300 = $250

    2. Chase Freedom Unlimited: The Everyday Card

    Annual fee: $0

    Earning rates:

  • 5% on travel (booked through Chase Travel Portal)
  • 3% on dining and drugstores
  • 1.5% on everything else
  • Why you need it: This is your default card for all purchases that don't fall into higher-earning categories. 1.5x on groceries, gas, utilities, insurance — everything.

Welcome bonus: 20,000 points after $500 spend in 3 months (worth $300 when redeemed through Sapphire Reserve)

    3. Chase Freedom Flex: The Rotating Category Card

    Annual fee: $0

    Earning rates:

  • 5x on rotating quarterly categories (up to $1,500 spend per quarter, then 1x) — must activate each quarter
  • 5% on travel (booked through Chase Travel)
  • 3% on dining and drugstores
  • 1x on everything else
  • Why you need it: The rotating 5x categories change every quarter and cover high-spend areas like gas stations, grocery stores, Amazon, PayPal, and home improvement stores.

Welcome bonus: 20,000 points after $500 spend in 3 months

    How the System Works Together

Step 1: Earn points across all three cards

  • Use Freedom Unlimited for all everyday spending (1.5x on everything)
  • Use Freedom Flex for rotating 5x categories (activate quarterly)
  • Use Sapphire Reserve for travel and dining (3x) and Chase Travel Portal bookings (10x)
  • Step 2: Combine all points into your Sapphire Reserve account

Chase lets you pool points from all three cards. Log into your Chase account, transfer points from Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex into your Sapphire Reserve account.

Step 3: Redeem for maximum value

  • Transfer to airline/hotel partners for premium redemptions (business class flights, luxury hotels)
  • Book through Chase Travel Portal at 1.5 cents per point
  • Sample Monthly Spending Breakdown

Here is how a typical month looks for me:

    | Category | Monthly Spend | Card | Points Earned |

    |----------|--------------|------|---------------|

    | Dining | $600 | Sapphire Reserve (3x) | 1,800 |

    | Groceries | $400 | Freedom Flex (5x, Q1 category) | 2,000 |

    | Gas | $150 | Freedom Flex (5x, Q3 category) | 750 |

    | Utilities, insurance, subscriptions | $500 | Freedom Unlimited (1.5x) | 750 |

    | Miscellaneous | $350 | Freedom Unlimited (1.5x) | 525 |

    | Total | $2,000 | | 5,825 points |

Annual points earned** (spending $2,000/month): **69,900 points

Value at 1.5 cents/point** (Sapphire Reserve redemption rate): **$1,048 in travel

And that is before welcome bonuses.

    Welcome Bonuses: The Accelerator

When you first sign up for the Chase Trifecta, you get welcome bonuses on all three cards:

  • Sapphire Reserve: 60,000 points after $4,000 spend in 3 months
  • Freedom Unlimited: 20,000 points after $500 spend in 3 months
  • Freedom Flex: 20,000 points after $500 spend in 3 months
  • Total welcome bonuses: 100,000 points

Value: $1,500 in travel (at 1.5 cents/point via Chase Travel Portal)

First-year total (welcome bonuses + annual spend): 169,900 points = $2,548 in travel

Best Redemptions: Where to Use Your Points

Option 1: Transfer to Airline Partners (Best for Premium Cabins)

Chase Ultimate Rewards transfer 1:1 to 14 airline and hotel partners. The best value redemptions:

    Hyatt hotels: 1:1 transfer. 25,000 points = 1 night at a Category 5 Park Hyatt (worth $600+). Value: 2.4 cents/point.

Singapore Airlines: 62,500 points = business class one-way to Asia (retail value $5,000+). Value: 8 cents/point.

    United Airlines: 70,000 points = round-trip economy to Europe. Value: 1.8 cents/point.

British Airways (Avios): 13,000 points = short-haul business class within Europe or Asia. Value: 3 cents/point.

Option 2: Book Through Chase Travel Portal (Easiest)

Use points at 1.5 cents each (with Sapphire Reserve) to book any flight, hotel, or car rental through the Chase Travel Portal.

Example: 40,000 points = $600 toward a hotel booking. Simple, flexible, no blackout dates.

Option 3: Pay Yourself Back (Last Resort)

Redeem points for 1.5 cents each (with Sapphire Reserve) as statement credits against travel purchases made outside the Chase Travel Portal.

Use this when: You already booked travel directly and want to apply points retroactively.

    Advanced Strategies

    1. Stack Freedom Flex 5x Categories with Shopping Portals

During Q4, Amazon is often a 5x category. Stack this with the Chase Shopping Portal (additional 2–5x points) to earn 7–10x total on Amazon purchases.

    Example: $1,000 Amazon spend during Q4 = 5,000 points (5x Freedom Flex) + 3,000 points (3x shopping portal) = 8,000 points.

    2. Use Sapphire Reserve for Chase Dining

Chase Dining partners with 20,000+ restaurants. Link your Sapphire Reserve card and earn 10x points on qualifying dining purchases (instead of the standard 3x).

Example: $100 dinner at a participating restaurant = 1,000 points (instead of 300).

    3. Prepay Travel Through Freedom Unlimited or Flex

If you are booking travel far in advance, consider prepaying with Freedom Unlimited (1.5x) or Freedom Flex during a 5x quarter. Transfer those points to Sapphire Reserve later.

    4. Downgrade Sapphire Reserve to Preferred (If Needed)

If the $550 annual fee feels too high, downgrade to the Chase Sapphire Preferred ($95/year). You still get 1.25x redemption on the travel portal and the same transfer partners. You lose the $300 travel credit and lower redemption value, but it is a budget-friendly option.

Is the Chase Trifecta Worth It?

    Yes, if:

  • You spend $1,500+ per month on credit cards
  • You travel at least once per year
  • You can meet minimum spend requirements naturally (no manufactured spending)
  • You value flexibility (Chase transfers to 14 partners)
  • No, if:

  • You rarely travel
  • You cannot meet the $4,000 minimum spend for Sapphire Reserve
  • You prefer cash back over travel points
  • How to Get Started

Step 1: Apply for the Chase Sapphire Reserve (or Preferred if Reserve feels too expensive). This must be your first Chase card to maximize approval odds.

Step 2: After approval, wait 30 days and apply for Freedom Unlimited.

Step 3: After another 30 days, apply for Freedom Flex.

Step 4: Activate quarterly 5x categories on Freedom Flex every January, April, July, and October.

Step 5: Combine points quarterly into your Sapphire Reserve account.

Step 6: Redeem for travel when ready.

    The Bottom Line

The Chase Trifecta is the most powerful credit card setup for earning flexible travel points. With disciplined use, you can earn $1,500–$3,000 in annual travel value from everyday spending.

I have used this system to book business class flights to Tokyo, week-long stays at Park Hyatt properties, and last-minute domestic flights — all on points.

If you travel even twice a year, the Chase Trifecta pays for itself immediately.
