The Caribbean's weather follows patterns that make some islands excellent year-round and others dramatically better in specific months. Hurricane season, Carnival, and coral spawning all create compelling reasons to plan carefully.

The Best Time to Visit the Caribbean: Island-by-Island Guide

The Caribbean is 7,000 islands spread across 2.7 million square kilometers — and the weather, culture, and tourism patterns vary enormously between them. Here is the complete timing guide.

Understanding Caribbean Weather

The Caribbean has two seasons:

Dry season (December-April): Lower humidity, less rain, calmer seas, higher prices. This is peak tourist season for most islands.

Wet/hurricane season (June-November): Higher humidity, more rainfall (though typically afternoon showers, not all-day rain), lower prices. Hurricane risk is real — September-October are the peak risk months.

The transition months (May, November) are shoulder season — good weather, lower prices, and fewer tourists.

Island-by-Island Best Times

Barbados: December-May for the dry season. The east coast (Atlantic side) has consistent surf year-round; the west coast (Caribbean side) is calmest December-May. Crop Over Festival (August) is a major cultural event worth timing for.

Jamaica: Year-round destination, though December-April is peak season (best weather, highest prices). The north coast (Montego Bay, Ocho Rios) is sheltered from Atlantic swells. The Blue Mountains (2,256m) are cooler and accessible year-round.

Trinidad and Tobago: Trinidad's Carnival (February, dates vary — the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday) is one of the world's great festivals. Not just a tourist event — Trinidadian Carnival is deeply rooted in local culture and genuinely extraordinary. Tobago is best December-May for diving and beaches.

Puerto Rico: Year-round, though December-April is peak. The BioLuminescent Bay at Fajardo (one of the brightest bioluminescent bays in the world) is best visited on moonless nights year-round. El Yunque (the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system) is accessible year-round.

Turks and Caicos: December-April is peak (why the billionaire's playground empties in summer). The coral reef around Providenciales is world-class; humpback whale migration through the Turks Island Passage occurs January-March.

St. Barths: December-April for peak season — prices double, the island fills with yachts. February is the most expensive and most social month. May and November are excellent value with good weather.

The US Virgin Islands: December-April for the dry season. St. John's Virgin Islands National Park (60% of the island is protected) has the best hiking and snorkeling in the USVI.

Cuba: November-April for the dry season. The Havana Jazz Festival (January) and the Ballet Festival (October) are cultural highlights. The Viñales Valley (tobacco country) is extraordinary year-round.

Hurricane Season: The Reality

Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with peak activity mid-August to mid-October. The Gulf of Mexico and the south Caribbean are more hurricane-prone than the southern islands.

Low-risk islands: The southern Caribbean islands (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Trinidad and Tobago) are rarely hit — they sit south of the main hurricane track. These are year-round destinations.

Higher-risk islands: The US and British Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, and the Turks and Caicos sit in the primary hurricane corridor.

If you travel during hurricane season: Travel insurance with hurricane coverage is essential. Monitor weather forecasts. The same season offers 30-50% hotel discounts, empty beaches, and genuine local culture without the peak-season tourist density.

Cultural Events Worth Timing For

Trinidad Carnival (February): One of the world's great carnivals. Book 6 months in advance.

Jamaica Reggae Sumfest (July): The world's premier reggae festival in Montego Bay.

Barbados Crop Over (August): The summer harvest festival — calypso competitions, colorful costumes, Grand Kadooment Day parade.

Cuba Jazz Festival (January, Havana): World-class jazz in the most atmospheric city in the Caribbean.
