Asia's weather is dominated by monsoon systems that make some destinations extraordinary in one season and impossible in another. This guide tells you exactly when to go — and when to stay home.

When to Visit Asia: The Complete Month-by-Month Weather Guide

Asia covers 44 million square kilometers and contains the world's most extreme weather systems. The South Asian monsoon brings 6 meters of rain to Cherrapunji, India, annually. Siberia reaches -50°C in winter. Singapore is 32°C and 85% humidity year-round. Knowing which Asia you are visiting and when to go is essential.

Southeast Asia: The Monsoon Matrix

Southeast Asia is divided between two monsoon systems:

The Southwest Monsoon (May-October): Hits Thailand's Andaman Coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta), Myanmar, and western Malaysia first. Brings heavy rain and rough seas.

The Northeast Monsoon (November-March): Hits Thailand's Gulf Coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan), Vietnam, and the Philippines.

The key insight: when one side of Thailand is wet, the other is dry. Plan accordingly.

Thailand:

  • Andaman coast (Phuket, Koh Lanta): Best November-April; avoid May-October
  • Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan): Best February-September; November-December can be rough
  • Bangkok and Chiang Mai: Best November-February (dry season, cooler temperatures)
  • Vietnam:

  • North (Hanoi): Best October-April (dry, cooler); May-September can be very hot and wet
  • Central (Hoi An, Danang): Best February-August; September-November is typhoon season
  • South (HCMC): Best December-April; May-November is wet season (but still warm)
  • Bali, Indonesia:

  • Best: April-October (dry season). The island is beautiful year-round but July-August is peak tourist season
  • Wet season: November-March (heavy afternoon showers but not full-day rain — still very visitabile)
  • Philippines:

  • Best: November-May across most islands. January-March is ideal
  • Typhoon season: June-November for the eastern coasts; less impactful on western coasts (Palawan)
  • Palawan: Best November-June; July-October is wet but Palawan is somewhat typhoon-sheltered
  • East Asia: Four Clear Seasons

    Japan:

  • Spring (March-May): Cherry blossom season (late March-early April) is peak tourism and expensive. Late April-May is excellent — mild, green, not crowded
  • Summer (June-August): Hot and humid in most of the country; the exception is Hokkaido (22°C in July). The rainy season (tsuyu) runs June-early July
  • Autumn (September-November): The best season. Red and gold foliage, clear skies, excellent hiking. Peak foliage late October-mid November
  • Winter (December-February): Cold but beautiful. Ski season in Hokkaido and the Japan Alps
  • South Korea (Seoul):

  • Best: April-May (cherry blossom) and September-October (autumn leaves)
  • Summer: Hot and humid; the rainy season (jangma) runs mid-June to late July
  • Winter: Very cold (-5 to -10°C in Seoul) but the ski resorts are excellent

    South Asia: The Subcontinent's Extremes

India: India's monsoon (June-September) transforms the subcontinent dramatically. The North Indian plains (Rajasthan, Delhi, Agra) are best October-March. Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the south have reversed monsoon patterns — the best time is January-February.

    Nepal (Everest trekking):

  • Best: October-November (post-monsoon — clear skies, mountain views)
  • Second best: March-May (pre-monsoon — longer days, warmer)
  • Monsoon season (June-September): Not recommended for high-altitude trekking
  • Sri Lanka:

  • West and south coasts: Best December-March
  • East coast (Arugam Bay surf): Best April-September
  • The seasons are reversed between the two coasts
